Generally, companies can be dissolved by either striking off (if the company is dormant, and meets all the conditions) or by a winding-up. Both processes are very different and should not be confused.

A striking-off is a straight-forward process whereas there are two types of liquidations - voluntary liquidation or a court-ordered winding-up. A company in liquidation is taken over by the liquidator, and it must cease all businesses except as required by the liquidator for the benefit of the disposal of assets or winding up of the business.
